The Gilbert ring was present in both the scenes where Elena turns her humanity off and where she turns it back on. What’s symbolic about this? Who does she throw Jeremy’s ring to? Damon. Who comes up with the plan to use Matt to spark some emotion in Elena? Damon. Even though Matt dying was what caused Elena to feel something, Damon helped allow her to feel something and was a big part in helping bring her humanity back to her.
